______________
(January 25, 2009)
The next day, back in Curitiba, we found our way through the city to visit the Jardim Botânico and the Passeio Publico. We were completely blown away by the countless species of trees and flowers at the botanical gardens. We discovered many aspects of the Brazilian flaura while being captivated by its colours, odours, and textures.
A later detour to the Passeio Publico made us discover, that time around, a part of the Brazilian fauna. We were simply expecting to wander around a beautiful public park downtown, but, to our astonishment, we saw a wide variety of birds that practically turned our walk into a trip to the zoo. We even stood around for a good fifteen minutes observing the silly acts of a quirky little bunch of monkeys.
Unlike the smooth unraveling of our afternoon, our last few hours in Curitiba gave way to some rather unexpected misadventures. After our visit to the botanical gardens and the public park, we had eager plans to find a good restaurant for supper. However, after about two hours of steady walking, we realized that there isn't much open on Sundays in Brazil. Not even restaurants. Then suddenly, we noticed a sign pointing the way toward a McDonald's. And we figured that McDonald's, surely, would be open. Desperate and starving, we started following the signs, arrow after arrow, like a treasure hunt. And finally, there it was.. the big yellow ''M''. For two people who aren't keen on fastfood and who usually avoid McDonald's in Canada, we had never been so excited at the thought of a McChicken and fries. We devoured it all, and even had a Brazilian-style McFlurry for dessert. They apparently don't mix McFlurry toppings in Brazil.
Our stomachs satisfied, we were happy and worry free. But at that point, we were oblivious to our upcoming marathon chase at the bus terminal. Due to our lengthy search for food and also having had to return to the hostel for our backpacks, we were running a little behind schedule. But all was still well, and despite having had to wait a while to catch the bus, we were confident we'd still make it on time. That was until four stops before getting to the terminal, when the bus driver decided to step out for a break to chat with someone outside. He was taking his sweet time, and we were quickly getting impatient. By the time we finally got to the terminal, it was 9:20 pm. Our bus was scheduled to leave at 9:20 pm. Great. By that point, we were no longer in denial that missing our bus was a big possibility, especially since we had no idea where the platform was, and we had 40-lbs hiking bags on our back. So, what did we do?.... We ran like chickens with their heads cut off. We finally found the platform, but only to get there to see the bus leave right in front of us. A security guard told us we could possibly catch it down the road, so we ran the last stretch of the marathon to the exit gate. Having caught up to the bus, the driver must have thought we were either crazy or pitiful, but in any case, he stopped and let us on. It was literally like a scene straight out of a movie.
Having no breath left to speak, we flopped into our seats and let out a big sigh. And so it is that, drenched in sweat, being that much more wise about Brazilian fauna and flora, and with the fond memories of a train and gondola boat ride, we left another city en route to some more grateful discoveries.
