(January 25, 2009)
The next day, back in Curitiba, we found our way through the city to visit the Jardim Botânico and the Passeio Publico. We were completely blown away by the countless species of trees and flowers at the botanical gardens. We discovered many aspects of the Brazilian flaura while being captivated by its colours, odours, and textures.
Unlike the smooth unraveling of our afternoon, our last few hours in Curitiba gave way to some rather unexpected misadventures. After our visit to the botanical gardens and the public park, we had eager plans to find a good restaurant for supper. However, after about two hours of steady walking, we realized that there isn't much open on Sundays in Brazil. Not even restaurants. Then suddenly, we noticed a sign pointing the way toward a McDonald's. And we figured that McDonald's, surely, would be open. Desperate and starving, we started following the signs, arrow after arrow, like a treasure hunt. And finally, there it was.. the big yellow ''M''. For two people who aren't keen on fastfood and who usually avoid McDonald's in Canada, we had never been so excited at the thought of a McChicken and fries. We devoured it all, and even had a Brazilian-style McFlurry for dessert. They apparently don't mix McFlurry toppings in Brazil.
Puis, on l'a reconnu.
We also discovered a cozy coffee shop where we treated ourselves to delicious empanadas (meat-filled pastries), and it is also the place where Dominic quenched his thirst with a bottle of Heineken for 2.70 Reais (merely 1.50$ CDN!), which he thought was another delightful treasure.
Our initial plan was to spend two days in Ouro Preto, but, inspired by the captivating atmosphere, we seized the moment and decided to extend our stay. We took advantage of the extra day to visit Mina da Passagem, an old underground gold mine. We didn't know exactly what to expect, but our acquaintance from France had suggested we go, saying it was "trop génial!". And so, in the lovely company of Ash and Meg (two girls from Wales) who joined us for the mine tour, we took a bus to Mariana, 7 kms from town. Once there, a steep and exciting trolley ride led us 120 meters underground. Inside the mine, the rocks and tunnnels juxtaposed with the reflection of the water and lights gave the impression of an underground palace.
